| Meet your “Inn Keepers”
Tom Baker and
Helen Kirkpatrick
Tom and Helen are long time residents of Hamilton. Both are passionately dedicated to preserving the past and especially the unique urban culture and architecture of their MacNab Street neighbourhood. Frequent business travelers, Tom and Helen saw a need for a bridge between a one or two night bed and breakfast/hotel and a monthly apartment rental. Owners since 1988, they have completed extensive professional renovations and upgrading of the property, under the direction of noted local architect, John Mokrycke - incorporating their ideas of a historic short and medium-stay guest house into reality.
Our History
Built in 1879 our guest house is comprised of the two centre residences in a series of six brick row houses designed by the famous Hamilton architect, James Balfour. Balfour was responsible for many fine buildings including the Detroit Museum of Art and Hamilton’s old city hall. The building is of flamboyant design combining two styles - San Francisco Italianate bay windows and High Victorian Gothic gables with intricate cornices and bargeboard. A unique feature is the original horse carriage entrance through the house to the rear parking area.
The houses were designated as significant properties by the City of Hamilton in 1989 because of their historic and architectural value. All original exterior features have been meticulously preserved or restored to their original grandeur.
